Can you Run with a Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
Jul 07, 2023
"If you have a prolapse then you shouldn't run". You have probably heard it before. Maybe even from your doctor, but it is not necessarily true. Depending on the severity of your prolapse, yes, focusing on prolapse management while taking on more low impact activities may be necessary for a short time. However, with the proper guidance from a pelvic floor physical therapist, you can be on your way to reaching your running goals while decreasing your prolapse symptoms.
For many vulva owners, you may be able to continue running with a pelvic organ prolapse (POP) diagnosis. With a pelvic organ prolapse, learning and understanding pressure management is key 🔑. We can help you modify your running style to make sure you can continue to manage your symptoms and support you in your prolapse recovery.
So what can we do in the meantime to assist with running?
Do your best to log your prolapse symptoms during and after your run. Note the type of terrain you are running on, the distance of your run, and your speed/pace. For example, some folks may note that running at a slow pace on level ground is a relatively asymptomatic run, while others may experience leaking, heavy pressure in the lower abdomen and the pelvic floor.
While running, there are a few key things you can try to manage your prolapse symptoms and decrease the impact on your pelvic floor.
- Lean slightly forward at the ankles
- Decrease your speed
- Avoid running downhill when symptomatic
- Run on softer surfaces such as grass, dirt, or gravel
- Avoid pavement and concrete surfaces
You should not have to wait to speak to a pelvic floor physical therapist! If you have been diagnosed with or suspect a POP, give us a call today or text "prolapse" to (413) 203-9321.
